The BNP on Saturday accused the government of influencing the August 21 grenade attack case.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader’s statements indicate that they are out to influence the August 21 grenade attack case. People are confused as to who will write the verdict and who will implement that judgment,” said BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi in a press briefing at the party’s central office at Naya Paltan.
“Obaidul Quader who is also Awami League General Secretary, has said that the BNP will face grave crisis after the delivery of the verdict in the
August 21 grenade attack case. He also said that the verdict would be delivered in September.
“Quader’s statement proves that a blue print in the August 21 case is being drafted,” Rizvi said.
Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at an August 21 memorial programme said that Khaleda Zia and her son Tarique Rahman could be directly involved with the grenade attack on AL rally in the city.
Rizvi said, “Tarique Rahman’s name was not in the charge sheet submitted during the Moeen Uddin-Fakhruddin regime. After assuming office, Awami League appointed the then Special SP (Now Additional DIG of CID) Abdul Kahar Akand Investigation Officer even after his retirement, just to implicate Tarique with the case.”
The BNP leader said, “Kahhar Akand retired from the police department and sought nomination from Awami League to contest in election. He even worked for the party in the national polls in 2008. Awami League purposefully brought him back to the police department and made him the investigation officer of the case in 2009.”
In this way, Tarique was implicated in a supplementary charge sheet,” he said.
The BNP leader said, In the investigation report published on June 11, 2008, there was no name of Tarique Rahman.”
That report charged Mufti Hannan as the main planner of the attack.
“Mufti Hannan was taken to remand for 410 days in various cases and was forced to mention Tarique’s name. But he did not mention Tarique Rahman in his statement under section 164.”
“So everyone knows there is no legal basis of the statement as there is no instance to confess twice in the same case,” he said. BNP central leader Belal Ahmed and Aminul Islam, among others, were present.
