UNB, Dhaka :
Discussants at the BBC Sanglap here on Saturday said the government failing to ensure justice and playing an inactive role in the wake of huge incidents of forced disappearances in the country.
They also raised concerns over the involvement of members of law enforcement agencies in most of the cases of forced disappearance.
The BBC Bangladesh Sanglap on ‘Human Rights
Situation’ was arranged by BBC Media Action and BBC Bangla at Bangla Academy Conference Hall in the city.
The panelists were Prime Minister’s Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, BNP chairperson’s adviser Shahjahan Omar, Unnayan Bikalper Nitinirdharoni Gobeshona (UBINIG) executive director Farida Akhtar and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Fawzia Karim Firoze.
Responding to criticisms of the government by his co-panelists, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said, “The incidents of forced disappearances are true but the consideration that the government is inactive in this regard is not correct.”
Shahjahan Omar observed that incidents of forced disappearance can not take place without the help or involvement of law enforcers. Exemplary punishment of criminals in law enforcing agencies can curb the murders and forced disappearances in the country, added Shahjahan.
BBC Bangladesh Sanglap was produced by Waliur Rahman Firoz while Akbar Hossain moderated the programme.
