The BNP on Tuesday accused the government of implicating the party leaders in the August 21 grenade attack case as part of their conspiracy to eliminate the party.
“No BNP leaders were involved in the August 21 grenade attack case. But the government has implicated them as part of their conspiracy to eliminate the party,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a discussion meeting at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU).
Mirza Fakhrul made the remark a day before the delivery of the verdict of the grenade attack case.
The court is to deliver the judgment of the case today (Wednesday).
Shahid Zehad Smriti Parishad organised the commemorative meeting marking the 28th death anniversary of JCD activist Nazir Uddin Zehad who was killed on October 10, 1990 during the movement against autocratic ruler H M Ershad.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The ruling Awami League is capitalising the issue of grenade attack incident to destroy the BNP.”
“The government implicated BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman by appointing an investigation officer (IO), a retired police officer, intentionally,” he said. The secretary general said, “I can say with swear that Tarique Rahman, and BNP leaders Abdus Salam Pintu, Lutfuzzaman Babor and none of BNP men were involved with the August 21 grenade attack incident. Tarique was involved with the case politically.”
“No fair investigation into the incident has yet been ensured. The truth behind the attack would come out if the real perpetrators behind the attack would have been identified through a fair investigation,” Fakhrul said.
A total of 24 Awami League leaders and activists, including Mohila Awami League president Ivy Rahman, were killed and more than 300 others injured in the grenade attack on the Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka on August 21, 2004.
