A coordinated agriculture development project is progressing in three southern districts of the country to produce 55,000 tonnes additional food in the next three years.
A total of 22,000 hectares of cultivable land under the districts of Pirojpur, Bagerhat and Gopalganj have already been brought under the project to be implemented by 2017.
The project costing about Taka 205.42 crore covers 21 upazilas, said M Mizanur Rahman, superintendent engineer of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC).
He said a project implementation unit has been constituted to coordinate the overall activities of the scheme.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Department of Agriculture Marketing (DAM), Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI) and Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) are jointly implementing the project.
One hundred and 92 demonstration plots of high yielding variety (HYV) of Aus and 60 plots for Kharif-2 of HYV and aromatic variety have already been set up in Pirojpur for the purpose, DAE sources said.
