BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has said that the present government is being isolated day by day and it is now desperate to cling to power illegally. She made the comment in a press statement issued on Thursday to protest the arrest of the party standing committee member, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. Dr Mosharraf was arrested on Wednesday night from his Gulshan residence in the city.  Khaleda Zia, condemning the arrest of the party senior leader, said, “The government is illegal. It is hatching conspiracy to ruin the BNP in attempt to sustain in power illegally. The arrest of Dr Mosharraf is a part of the conspiracy.” She demanded immediate and unconditional release of Dr Mosharraf and withdrawal of all ‘false and fabricated cases’ filed against him. Sounding a note of caution, Khaleda Zia said that the government is moving towards dire consequence through arresting a senior politician like Dr Mosharraf. It wants to stop the anti-government movement through arresting such leaders. The movement will not be stopped rather it will be intensified. She was also critical of the government for the increase of abduction and extra-judicial killings across the country in the recent time. She alleged that the Awami League government has snatched away the people’s rights to voting by arranging a farcical national poll on January 5 and forming an illegal government. Meanwhile, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office claimed that Dr Mosharraf was the victim of conspiracy, as the government arrested him to hide its misrule, misdeeds and massive corruption in different sectors.  He, on behalf of the party, demanded immediate release of the BNP senior leader. Otherwise, he warned that the government would have to face a dire consequence.
