UNB, Dhaka :Observing that the government has failed to ensure people’s security, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Saturday said it has no right to stay in power.”The government has no right to remain in power as it has failed to ensure security of public life and property and good governance,” he said while exchanging views with his party leaders of Shariatpur district unit at its Banani office.Ershad, also the special envoy to the Prime Minister, announced that his party would launch a movement to realise the people’s rights, if necessary.”If necessary, I’ll take my party men to the street to expose the failure of the government,” he said, adding that their movement will be peaceful and not like that of BNP-Jamaat who ‘torched vehicles and killed people’.Criticising both Awami League and BNP, the Jatiya Party chief said none of their governments gave the country anything except politicisation, tender manipulation and partisan politics.About the role of his party under the Awami League-led alliance government, the former military ruler claimed that his party is the only one which criticises the government joining parliament and speaks for the people. He also mentioned that in the past, all the opposition parties boycotted the parliament sessions but enjoyed the benefits like salaries, allowances and other privileges as MPs.About the fall of his rule in the face of a mass upsurge, Ershad said mere capital-based movement forced him to step down in 1990. “I could have retained in power if I wished. But I didn’t want to remain in power by killing people.” Among others, party secretary general Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu and presidium member Mir Abdus Sabur were present.
