A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists threw Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute Principal Engineer Farid Uddin Ahammed into a pond on Saturday, allegedly for rejecting the ‘illegal demand’ of the BCL activists. RPI Principal said on Saturday evening that a group of BCL activists went to his room in the morning with the demand of allowing two of their activists to sit for the examinations, as per a local daily report. The Principal declined to do so and asked them to meet the department chair. But they verbally assaulted him and then threw him into the pond of the institute. Meanwhile, a video footage corroborates the account that a group of eight students did the audacious work. But when contacted, RPI unit BCL president stated that they were not sure about whether BCL activists were involved in the incident or not. He, however, said that organisational action would be taken if BCL men were found involved in the accident.
While the Officer-in-Charge of Chandrima Police Station stated that they recorded the complaint by the Principal, as a case it remains to be seen whether justice will eventually be served upon those audacious enough to lay hands on their Principal. The sheer brute force’s attack on the Principal reminds us once again why public perception about the BCL becomes so negative in the recent days. There is a gulf of difference between beating the political opponents and assaulting the Principal of a college by his own students. This atrocious act is simply a byproduct of the entrenched immunity which they perceive themselves to have —and it is this very immunity which gives rise to their impunity.
The nation doesn’t want to see these people simply expelled from both BCL and the college concerned but to save Chhatra League from being part of terrorism politics of the government.
