Govt for max utilization of jute products: Mirza Azam

State Minister for Textile and Jute, Mirza Azam yesterday said as an election pledge Awami League government revived the almost ruined jute sector in the country.
He said 60 state-run jute mills out of 90 jute mills were looted in the name of privatisation after the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken a project with an outlay of Taka 200 crore to produce quality jute in 200 upazilas across the country.
The State Minister said while inaugurating a five-day fair on diversification of jute products as the chief guest at Boishakhi Mela field in the town here ahis morning.
The State Minister said as polythene and plastic commodities are hazourdous for our environment, our government is working to ensure maximum utilisation of jute products.
He said we passed a bill in 2010 in parliament to ensure maximum of use of jute products. He said under this Act jute begs should be used for packing six commodities like paddy, rice, wheat, maize, sugar and fertilizer. After October 25 any violation of the act wouldn’t be tolerated, he added.
In the fair a total of 42 stalls of diversified jute products including jute made paper, office items, begs, thread, nursery items, home textile, fabrics, show piece and domestic materials were showcased.
District Administration under the auspicious of Jute Diversification Promotion Center (JDPC) arranged the fair.
Chaired by Deputy Commissioner, Md Shahabuddin Khan it was addressed among others by local lawmaker Rezaul Karim Hira, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Textile and Jute, Dr Nazrul Anwar, Chairman BJMC, Major General (Rtd) Humayun Khaled, Executive Director, JDPC, Nasima Begum, Superintendent of Police, Md Nizam Uddin and Secretary, District Awami League Faruk Ahmed Chowdhury.
Earlier a colourful rally led by the State Minister brought out from Bakultola area in the town and ended at the fair premises.
The fair will conclude on October 6.
