BNP on Tuesday postponded its countrywide demonstration which was scheduled to be held today (Wednesday) demanding party chief Khaleda Zia’s release.
The decision came in the wake of detection of coronavirus cases in Bangladesh.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir declared it in a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office on Tuesday afternoon.
Confirming the decision, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the party leaders and activists to stand by the people of the country.
He said, “We earlier announced demonstration programme in all metropolitan cities and district towns for Wednesday demanding the release of our leader Khaleda Zia. We’re now postponing the programme to avoid the health risk of people as mass gatherings spread coronavirus.”
Meanwhile, BNP Secretary has alleged that the government has failed to take proper preparations against the coronavirus.
Fakhrul urged the government to take prompt preventative measures so that the disease cannot spread further in the country.
He said though the government has specified three hospitals for the treatment of the coronavirus infected patients, the other patients from those hospitals are not shifted yet.
The BNP leader suggested the government to impart the doctors and nurses with necessary training so that they can properly ensure treatment to the infected patients.
He accused the government of ignoring its irresponsibility by giving main focus on Mujib Year celebrations, ignoring public interests.
Fakhrul said, the government has not taken steps to increase import or production of masks and hand sanitizers, causing unusual hike in prices of the items following the detection of coronavirus cases in the country.
The BNP leader demanded the government to shut down the schools and colleges at least for two weeks to avoid further spreading of coronavirus in the country.
The first three coronavirus infected patients were detected in Bangladesh on Sunday. The infected patients included two men and one woman, and all of them were kept in quarantine.
BNP standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Selima Rahman, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were, among others, present.
