BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday said, the government is giving lip service only to the people instead of taking steps to bring down the onion price.
He said, “Onion price generally used to come down after the Eid-ul-Azha in the past, but this year the picture is opposite, quite opposite. The price has been gradually increasing. It is now being sold at Tk 140 per kg, which is beyond comprehensible.
Khosru said it while speaking at a discussion arranged by the Jatiyatabadi Projonmo 71 at the Jatiya Press Club yesterday noon.
The BNP leader said, it is ridiculous that suggestion is being given not to consume onion, as a solution to the crisis.
“If the prices of egg, oil and rice go up, will the government suggest not to consume those foods?. He questioned.
He said the government is not at all serious about arresting the onion price hike, as it is least concerned about people’s sufferings since it does not require their votes.
Earlier at a press conference
in the party’s Nayapaltan central office, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that the price hike of the essentials, especially that of onion, are the contribution of the government’s wrong policy and corruption.
Rizvi also alleged that the government backed-business syndicate has raised the onion price to make quick money.
