‘Govt deploys 47 ferries in country’

The government has deployed 47 ferries to carry out smooth transportation of buses, trucks and other motor vehicles across the country.
Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said this on Wednesday in the House while replying to a question from treasury bench member MA Malek.
He said the government is constructing three more ferries, which would be added in the existing fleet to transport motor vehicles smoothly in March/ April 2015.
“Out of the total 47 ferries, sixteen ferries are carrying motor vehicles on Paturia-Daulatdia-Kazirhat river route, while the rest of ferries are transporting bus, trucks and other vehicles on other river routes,” the minister said.
He informed the House that all ferries are giving 24 hours service and
transporting 4,200 motor vehicles daily.
Replying to another question from treasury bench member Noor Jahan Begum,
Shajahan Khan said told the House that 22 river ports under Bangladesh Inland
Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) have been running across the country.
“Ten river ports are old and 12 river ports are newly established across the
country,” the minister added.
