BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the government is trying to avoid political talks in ‘fear of a debacle’ in a credible and impartial election.
“Our position on the next polls is very clear. We’ve been saying we want a level-playing field and neutral administration to ensure a proper environment for an inclusive election,” he said.
The BNP leader further said, “Also, we’ve long been saying for a dialogue over holding the polls under a neutral government. But they (govt) aren’t responding to it as they know it very well that they won’t be able to come to power if people can cast their vote.”
Fakhrul came up with the remarks while inaugurating a daylong free medical camp at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office arranged by Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh, marking the 82nd birth
anniversary of party founder Ziaur Rahman.
He also said their party will come up with the framework of an election-time supportive government at a right time.
Justifying their party’s demand for holding the 11th parliamentary polls under a neutral government, the BNP leader said the government has continued its repressive acts and harassing their party leaders and activists in ‘false’ cases. “They’re arresting our leaders and activists regularly across the country. If such a situation prevails, how’ll election be held in a fair manner?”
He said no election can be held credibly under Sheikh Hasina and Awami League government as they want to snatch everything by force. “We must resist their usurping attitude.”
