BSS, Dhaka :
Planning Minister MA Mannan said that the government is ahead in eradicating poverty in the country by 2030 as per target of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The minister said this on Thursday while addressing a seminar on ‘Women’s Empowerment Towards Attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ as chief guest held at the Planning Ministry’s conference room in city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
US-based Hunger Project Global Vice President and Country Director Dr Badiul Alam Majumder made the key-note presentation at the seminar. General Economics Division (GED) member of the Planning Commission Dr Shamsul Alam also spoke.
Mannan said it is possible to eradicate poverty from the country by 2030 and to achieve this target, the NGOs, the civil society organizations and the private sector will have to work with the government in a coordinated manner. Terming the targets envisaged in the SDGs as universal, he said that the government is pursuing a ‘whole society approach’ in this regard which aims to ‘Leave no one behind, rather to take everyone with them’. The Planning Minister opined that the civil society organizations like the Hunger Project could play an important role in this regard as the government can channel their knowledge and experiences into its acts through them. Citing that seasonal poverty like ‘Monga’ not only existed in Bangladesh, but such poverty was also seen in the rich countries or among the countries of the north in the past and they have coped with it with the passage of time.
He said the government is now putting its utmost efforts to contain the spread of ‘dengue’ virus through various cleaning operations.
