A newspaper on Thursday reported that the current session of Jatiya Sangsad is likely to pass a law — titled “Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner Appointment Act, 2022”– with a view to bringing all existing and previous Chief Election Commissioners and other Commissioners, who were picked up by the search committees, under the umbrella of law.
This law is mainly for giving legal protection to the search committees. Under this government, the elections are conducted by the government officers actively with police help. Despite press restrictions such practice got wide publicity.
Bluffing the people about farcical elections is no more possible. It is known to all that elections are managed by government administration with active help of the police. The people have no faith in elections under this government. The government also does not believe in free election. It does not have the courage to face the people.
Earlier in 2018 and 2014, we experienced the process of choosing Election Commissioners through discussions with political parties. In the last general election, apart from bribing political parties the police were also used freely to the knowledge of all. If the government has any honesty left let a judicial commission should be formed to investigate the incidents of the last election which was famously called ‘yesterday’s results were announced today’.
The Union Parishad elections are now being held under active participation of the administration in election rigging. As per reported in media, the UP polls have already been held in five phases out of total six phases. In these elections, more than 1500 candidates have won uncontested before voting had begun. Of them, the number of chairman was 350, member 847 and member of reserved seat 355. Majority of the winners are ruling Awami League leaders and activists.
Our appeal to the Chief Justice is not to involve judges in the politics of election process. The elections, if held at all, there will be cases for malpractices and the judges will have to give judgements. So it is important for the judiciary to remain aloof.
The government is so eager to show holding free election under the new law. But the best thing for it would be to resign power and take part in the election under their own arrangements.
The fact of corruption is so huge in the elections that it is not possible to have election victory for honest political parties by doing honest politics.
Honest elections are a must for honest politics and true people’s political parties. The politics has become money grubbing corruption business. The people want to be saved from the curse of biggest anti-people corrupt election.
