Gopalganj farmers busy for preparing seedbeds for Boro cultivation

The farmers in the district are busy for preparing their seedbeds to grow healthy seedlings for Boro cultivation during the current Boro season. According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) & local seed traders, Gopalganj about 1900 metric tonnes (MT) of local, High Yielding Variety (HYV) & Highbrid seeds will be grown on 4360 hectors of land in the district this current season.
Now the farmers are busy for preparing the seedbeds, particularly in the low-laying areas in the hope of growing healthy seedlings for better yield after transplantation of those on crop land. About 50 percent seedbeds had already been prepared and the rest would be completes around coming January, DAE official sources said.
To make the programme for success high quality seeds of the paddy like BRRI Dhan 28, 29, 47, 50, BR 14, 26 & Bina Dhan 11, 16, 20, Hira-1, Hira-2, Hira-6, Chamoc-1, Babilon, Monihar-6, Durbar, Agomoni, Mollica-3, Gold, Moharaj, Sosschol, Basmoti are being distributed among the farmers by Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) & local seed traders, Gopalganj. It is mentioned that Department of Agriculture Extension, Gopalganj 3,99,518 hectors of land have been brought under Boro cultivation in the district this current season. On the other hand, Awal Molla (55) a farmer of village Golabaria under Gopalganj Sadar Upazila of the district told The New Nation that high quality of seeds supplied him from Agriculture Office, and he complained his seedbeds for cultivation of Boro for current season. Besides many of the farmers prepared their seedbeds by showing their own seeds for their Boro fields, some farmers said.
Gopalganj Free Day observed
Gopalganj District (the then sub-division) was freed from the Pakistani occupation armies and their local collaborators on December 19, 1971.
During the liberation war several fierce battles were fought against the Pakistani armies and their collaborators by the Freedom Fighters in Gopalganj, Hemayet Uddin Ahmed, Kamalesh Badgya, Sihabuddin and Kadir Gama led the freedom Fighters in the battles.
On the 30th April 1971 the enemy forces invaded Gopalganj town and burnt various parts of the towns to ashes and looted the Gopalganj branch of the than State Bank of Pakistan, on that day they also Set ablaze the houses in the village of Manihar under Gopalganj sadar upazila and killed hundreds of men and women including Professor Santosh Kumar Das of the than Quadi-e-Azam Memorial collage (presently Govt. Bangabandhu University College).
