The court sentenced six years rigorous imprisonment (RI) to an accused of a gold smuggling case on Thursday. The court also fined Tk 10,000 in failure of payment of fine, the court also sentenced three months more for the accused.
The accused were identified as Mohammad Belal Uddin, son of Nur Alam of Kefayet Nagar under Fatikchari upazila in Chittagong.
The court of Chittagong Metropolitan session judge Shahe Noor announced the verdict. The court sentenced six years RI to the accused of a gold smuggling case Mohammad Belal Uddin in absence of the accused.
Chittagong Metropo-litan Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Fakruddin said, court sentenced six years RI to Mohammad Belal Uddin, the accused of a gold smuggling case.
Sources said, Mohammed Belal Uddin reached Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport on March 31 in 2015 and the custom department recovered 19 gold bars from his luggage at that time. Later, custom department filed a case in this connection with Patenga thana.
Police submitted the charge sheet on May 26, in 2015 and the court framed charge against Mohammea Belal Uddin on September 1 in the same year.
The court heard the testimonies of a total of 14 witnesses and announced the verdict on Thursday. The accused Mohammed Belal Uddin is still absconding.
