A Chittagong court yesterday sentenced a gold smuggler to life term imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling 58 gold bars through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CSAIA) in 2014.
The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shah-e-Nur also fined him Taka 10,000 and in default to suffer three months more imprisonment.
The convicted gold smuggler is Abdullah Al Amin, 34, hailed from Binoyjury area under Raozan upazila of the district.
Court sources said customs intelligence arrested Amin with 58 gold bars from CSAIA on September 21 in 2014 and filed a case against him with city’s Patenga Thana in this connection.
Police submitted charge-sheet against him on January 31, 2015 while the court framed charges against him on April 13 the same year.
The court today after examining a total of nine prosecution witnesses out of 11 and passed the verdict convicting Amin who has been absconding after getting bail from the court, court sources said.
