A court in Chittagong sentenced a gold smuggler to life-term imprisonment in a case filed for smuggling gold bars worth about Taka eight crores through Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CSAIA) in 2014.
The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shah-e-Nur also fined the convict Taka 10 thousand and in default to suffer three months more imprisonment in a verdict on Monday.
The convict gold smuggler is Mohammad Sarwar Hossain, 42, hailed from Dhormopur village under Fatikchhari upazila of the district.
Court sources said customs intelligence arrested Dubai-returnee Sarwar with 138 gold bars weighing 16.9 kilograms from CSAIA on June 14 in 2014
Customs Intelligence Unit seized the gold bars after searching his luggage at green channel of the airport but Sarwar managed to escape leaving the luggage at the airport. Later, Customs Intelligence authority after verifying the ownership of the luggage and ticket name of the passenger filed a case against him with city’s Patenga Thana three days later of the seizure of the gold bars.
Police submitted charge-sheet against him on December 16, 2014 while the court framed charges against him on October 10, 2015. The court after examining a total of six prosecution witnesses out of 10 and passed the verdict in absentia of the convict Sarwar, court sources said.
