A Chittagong court on Sunday sentenced a gold smuggler to seven years of imprisonment for smuggling gold eight years ago.
The court of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Shah-e-Nur also fined him TK 10,000 and in default to suffer imprisonment for three months more.
The convicted gold smuggler is Mohammad Nayeem, son of late Ali Ahmad, hailing from Jahanpur village under Fatikchhari upazila of the district.
Court sources said, Customs Intelligence arrested Nayeem with 15 gold bars from Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport on March 23 in 2008 and filed a case with city’s Patenga Thana against him in this connection.
Police submitted charge-sheet against him on June 19, 2008 while the court framed charges on August 28 the same year.The court after examining a total of eight prosecution witnesses and pronounced the verdict convicting Nayeem who is absconding now.
