Godown in Ctg sealed: Gold, ornaments worth Tk 8cr seized

Chittagong Bureau :Chittagong Metropolitan Police recovered huge quantities of gold bars and ornaments from a godown of AC Mela Company in the port city in the wee hours on Thursday . The godown is located at Anu Majhirghat under Sadarghat thana of Chittagong Metropolitan. Two persons suspected to have been involved with the smuggling of gold were rounded up by police on the spot. The detainees have been identified as Md.Imran(28) and Giasuddin Tito (35). The approximate weight of the seized gold would be about 20 kilograms, police sources said, that the number of gold bars is 120, weighing about 15 kilograms, and ornaments weighing five kilograms. The approximate market price of the seized gold will be about Taka eight crore, sources said. The ornaments include 16 hand bala, 12 bungles ,four sets of necklace chains, ear ring, two thick necklace chains, two shitli, one big locket, 32 necklace chains, one tikli chain, two ear ring chains, four necklace, 20 chains, six sets of stone necklace, 12 pairs of ear rings, nine sets of necklace mala and 14 small chains. Officer in Charge of Sadargat thana Md. Abul Kalam said that in the name of importing electronic items, gold smuggling were going on for long, the arrested persons confessed to police. Police conducted raid in the godown when the detained persons were filling the cartons with gold bars for transportation to Dhaka. Police sources said that after the confessional statement given by the detainees, police recovered ornaments from LED Monitor, and LCD TV packed with carbon inside the electronic items . Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kotwali Zone, Shah Md. Abdur Rauf told this correspondent that these gold bars and ornaments had been brought from Dubai with false declaration of electronic consignment evading government duties. CMP police suspect that more gold might remain in all electronic cartons of the godown and so the godown had been sealed instantly for further investigation, sources said.
