A man with suspected ties to a robbery at an MP’s house in Thakurgaon has died in what the police described as a shootout.
The shootout took place at Upazila’s Jagannathpur neighbourhood on Monday night, said Farhat Ahmed, superintendent of police for the district. In a media briefing on Tuesday, Ahmed said the man was about 30 years old. “We are yet to know the name of the man, but we can confirm that he was involved in the robbery at the MP’s house.” On a tip-off, the police raided Haripukur area where some of the suspected robbers were hiding, said Ahmed.
“Sensing the presence of policemen, the robbers opened fire forcing them to retaliate. One robber was hit by bullet in the gunfight and the rest fled the scene,” he said. The fatally injured man was taken to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Four DB police officers injured in the gunfight underwent treatment in hospital. Weapons were recovered from the scene. On March 13, a gang of masked armed robbers stormed the house of MP and Awami League’s district unit chief Dabirul Islam in Baliadanga Upazila in Thakurgaon and looted the gold ornaments holding the MP’s wife, housekeeper and guard at gunpoint in a predawn heist. During the robbery, the MP along with his two sons was in Thailand for treatment.
His younger brother Mohammad Ali had filed a case against 20 unknown persons after the robbery. Later, DB police started investigating the case.
