Gold, cigarettes seized at HSIA, one held

Staff Reporter :Customs Intelligence seized around 1.5 kilograms of gold ornaments and foreign cigarettes worth around Tk 86.8 lakh and detained one person in this connection from the city’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Friday. Customs Intelligence Director General (DG) Moinul Khan said that customs intelligence members conducted a raid at HSIA around 12:00pm and saw a man passing through the green channel of the airport along with a vacuum cleaner. They arrested the man and recovered around nine pieces of gold balls, 12 chains and 12 rings worth around Tk 75 lakh after searching the vacuum. He came from Singapore by a flight MH102.The detained person has been identified as Mahibul Khan, 39, son of Nurul Haque Khan, hailing from Louhajang upazila in Munshiganj district, DG said. In a separate drive, Customs Intelligence’ Assistant Customs Commissioner Abu Yusuf said that customs officials recovered 1,135 cartons of foreign cigarettes from the HSIA. Three Pakistani nationals were carrying the cigarettes. They came from Colombo of Sri Lanka by a Sri Lankan Airlines at about 1:00pm. The estimated price of the cigarette is around Tk 11.8 lakh, the customs official said.
