Speakers at a roundtable discussion demanded from the government to adopt zero tolerance policy against adulterated and unhygienic food.
They praised the recent crackdown by various government organisations including the High Court and BSTI against low-quality of food and urged them to continue this drive.
The roundtable discussion titled “Look for Adulteration-free, Hygenic & Safe Foods” held at the National Press Club on Tuesday, with writer Syed Abul Maksud Ahmed in the chair.
Dr. Shamsul Alam, Advisor of Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) was the main speaker and Dr. Sharfuddin Ahmed, Former Secretary General of BMA, Dr. Abdul Matin, General Secretary of BAPA; Socio-theorist Dr. Salimullah Khan; Advocate Manjil Morshed and Founder Chairman of Safe Foods Authority, Mustak Hasan Md Iftekhar, also shared their views and opinion as special guests.
Speakers said that people of Bangladesh are suffering from acute and serious diseases and are financially affected by eating adulterated food day after day. Most food items in Bangladesh are adulterated in various ways. This problem exists at every level- from the production stages to consumption. Food producers, processors, various hotels and food shops are all involved in this process.
SAAOL Heart Center, the Pioneer of Heart Disease Treatment without operation in Bangladesh organised the round-table discussion.
Syed Abul Maksud said, “The crisis of safe and healthy foods is the most dangerous peril of Bangladesh. There is no substitute for safe food in building up a meritorious nation. The dishonest businessmen are responsible for adulterated food and the lack of public awareness is also responsible. Therefore, it is very important to build safe food movement.”
Speaking at the function, Dr. Shamsul Alam said, “Food becomes polluted. But Food has to be oil-free on priority basis like carbon free fuel. Foods supply chain would also have to be free from pollution. There is no alternative of the people’s participation and empowerment in order to ensure safe foods.
Dr. Salimullah Khan said, adulteration in food is the product of adulteration in politics. We have to fight against both adulteration.
Advocate Manzil Morshed said that the Soul Heart Center has started a movement against adulterated food, in line with our Constitution. Such initiatives should spread across the country.
Poet Mohan Raihan, Chairman of Soul Heart Center, Bangladesh, announced to create a safe food movement across the country and urged everyone to come forward irrespective of their status.
