‘GO-NGO efforts can make VGD programme more effective’

Coordinated GO-NGO efforts can ensure transparency and accountability in proper selection of beneficiaries to make the vulnerable group development programme (VGD) programme more effective.
Speakers said this at a public hearing meeting on ‘Social Safety Net Programme VGD’ organised by Dhakkamara Union Samaj Kallyan Federation (DUSKF) at Chhatnai Government Primary School under Sadar upazila of Panchagarh on Sunday afternoon.
The DUSKF organised the public hearing under the ongoing five year term Improving Food Security Governance in South & Southeast Asia through Strengthened Participation of Organisations of Marginalised Farmers Regional Project.
The regional project is being implemented in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and Myanmar to improve livelihood of 10.20 lakh marginalised households, including ethnic communities, with assistance of European Union and Dan Church Aid.
Panchagarh Unit of RDRS Bangladesh extended assistance under its Food Security Governance Project in arranging the public hearing to bring more transparency and in selection of beneficiaries and distribution of food assistance under VGD programme.
A total of 210 males and females, including VGD beneficiaries, and members of DUSKF and common people of the area participated in the public hearing with Chairman of DUSKF Sree Dulen Chandra Roy in the chair.
Chairman of Dhakkamara union Mohammad Aman Ullah Bachchu attended the occasion and answered various questions asked by the participants as the chief guest.
Agriculture Officer of the Food Security Governance Project of RDRS Bangladesh for Panchagarh Mohammad Masud Parvez narrated various aspects of VGD and other social safety-net programmes of the government.
He discussed good governance for food security, rights to information for good governance, types and strategies of community advocacy to attain these rights, local service providing institutions and their services.
He also narrated the national food policy-2006 and government’s massive social safety-net programmes with budgetary allocations and role of the government and related laws for proper implementation of the programmes to ensure food security of the poor.
