Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury termed statelessness as a global problem and called for resolving the problem through global efforts.
She said statelessness is not a problem of any single state but a human crisis.
The Speaker said this on Monday while addressing a ceremony of unveiling a book titled “Nationality and Statelessness-Handbook for Parliament Members” at Bangabandhu International Convention Centre (BICC).
Inter-Parliamentary Union and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) organized the function.
Dr Chaudhury, chairperson of CPA (Commonwealth Parliamentary Association), said political will and coordinated initiatives of the global community are the keys to solving the crisis of statelessness.
She expressed the hope that parliament members of different countries can
play an important role to solve this crisis through formulating local laws in
congruity with international laws.
The problem of statelessness creates social unrest and impedes the social
and economic endeavors, she said.
The CPA chairperson underscored the need for holding talks at the
international level on the issue to find out the possible solutions.
IPU Pediment Saber Hossain Chowdhury and UNHCR country representative to
Bangladesh Shinji Kubo, among others, addressed the function.
