The overall number of global coronavirus cases has now surged past 281 million, with the new Covid strain Omicron showing a spike in hospitalisation.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 281,355,162 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,406,194 Tuesday morning.
The US has recorded 52,776,066 cases so far and more than 818,367 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
Brazil, which has been experiencing a new wave of cases since January, registered 22,249,466 cases as of Friday, while its Covid death toll rose to 618,815.
India’s Covid-19 tally rose to 34,799,241 on Monday, as 6,531 new cases were registered in 24 hours across the country, as per the health ministry data.
Besides, as many as 315 deaths due to the pandemic were reported since Saturday morning, taking the total toll to 480,018.
The number of Omicron cases has risen to 578 in the country and at least 151 have recovered, the health ministry said.
