The overall number of global Covid cases is fast nearing 214 million, as several countries continue their battle against the deadlier Delta variant of coronavirus even with mass inoculations underway.
According to US-based Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 214,840,644 and the death toll to 4,462,916 on Thursday morning.
So far, 5,035,870,728 vaccine doses have been administered across the globe.
The US, which is the world’s worst-hit country in terms of both cases and deaths, has so far logged 38,221,908 cases. Besides, 632,262 people have lost their lives in the US to date, as per the JHU data.
Brazil, which has the world’s second-highest pandemic death toll after the United States, and the third-largest caseload after the US and India, recorded 576,645 deaths and 20,645,537cases, respectively, Wednesday.
Neighbouring India’s total Covid cases surpassed 32.5 million on Wednesday. The country’s total death toll reached 435,758.
According to the World Health Organization, Covid-19 in India may be entering an endemic stage with a low or moderate level of transmission going on.
The endemic stage is when a population learns to live with a virus. It is very different to the epidemic stage when the virus overwhelms a population, reports Xinhua.
