The Special Tribunal-4 of Dhaka yesterday sentenced expelled Jubo League leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim, known as GK Shamim, and his seven bodyguards to life term in prison in an arms case.
Judge Sheikh Samidul Islam of the special tribunal-4 passed the order on Sunday in presence of all the convicts in his courtroom.
The seven bodyguards are- Md Jahidul Islam, Md Shahidul Islam, Md Kamal Hossain, Md Samsad Hossain, Md Aminul Islam, Md Delwar Hossain and Md Murad Hossain.
Earlier, the court recorded the depositions of 10 prosecution witnesses, including the complainant of the case. On January 28 of 2020, the same tribunal
framed charges against Shamim and others.
RAB Sub-Inspector Shekhor Chandra Mollick, Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet of the case to the court on October 27 of the same year.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members on September 20 of 2019 arrested Shamim on charges of extortion and tender manipulation. His seven bodyguards were also arrested.
On the day, the elite force members raided his house and office in the capital’s Niketan area and seized eight firearms, a huge amount of ammunition, fixed deposit receipt (FDR) worth Tk 165 crore, around Tk 1.8 crore in case, a large stash of US and Singaporean dollars and some foreign liquor.
Later, RAB filed three cases against Shamim with Gulshan Police Station.
