The teenage girl, whose body was found behind the altar of Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka early Sunday, was “strangled to death being failed in attempt to rape her,” said police.
A ‘wanderer’ was arrested in connection with the murder.
The accused, Khair, a 36-year old man, was arrested from the spot, said Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost inspector Bacchu Mia.
At about 3:00am on Sunday, Shahbagh police recovered the body of the 16-year-old girl from the rear side of the altar.
The deceased was from Kamrangichar Jhauchar area. She was a flower vendor at Shahbagh area. Injury marks were found on her neck.
Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mamun-ar-Rashid said police went to the Central Shaheed Minar receiving information that three girls were beating a boy. They were the friends of the girl. When police reached the Shaheed Minar, they found the girl unconscious and rushed her to the emergency department of DMCH, where on-duty doctors declared her dead at 3.00am. It means that the girl died earlier.
Police then arrested a wandered named Khair from the spot. Some friends of the victim were beating the 36-year-old Khair near Shaheed Minar. The girls’ friends were also being questioned.
Quoting the friends of the victim, the OC said the deceased girl was the friend of three girls. They stay at the Central Shaheed Minar area as floating. Arrested Khair was also a floating person. Khair made a ‘bad proposal’ to the girl on Saturday night. As she refused the proposal, ‘Khair tried to rape her and at one stage, strangled her to death.’
