BSS, Rangamati :
Cultivation of ginger and turmeric on hills has become a vital factor for the tribal people to earn money which has brought a positive change in their life in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region.
Most of the hilly people were in abject poverty before taking up the farming. Now they are leading a tremendous change in their life with three-time meals in a day and their children are going to schools regularly.
Asha Lata, 35, once a hapless housewife with polite and satisfied look told BSS that she brought about a revolutionary change in her family by ginger and turmeric cultivation on Rangamati-Chittagong highway at Ghagra under Kaukhali Upazila of the district.
Cultivation of ginger has become the main income source of the couple, Lalita, 38, and her husband Chhabi Kumar Tanchangya, 47, living at Ranyachhari on the bank of the Kaptai Lake in Sadar upazila of the district.
Hilly people have been gaining economic stability through cultivating ginger and turmeric on the slope of the hills, said sexagenarian Noyadhan Tanchangya a framer of Kaptai Lake area. Besides, using as spices, ginger and turmeric are also useful for human health as medicine, according to herbal science.
The farmers of the areas urged the government for their logistic support and supply of modern equipments among the cultivators.
Both the cultivators and traders in the area would be benefited highly if the government pave the way of marketing alongside patronizing them.
