Staff Reporter :Ghulam Azam, the former chief of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, was announced clinically dead on Thursday night at Bangabondhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University [BSMMU], the hostial authority said.However, no government announcement was available till the time of filing this report at 10:45pm yesterday.Earlier, he was undergoing treatment in life support in BSMMU and his condition was critical.Ghulam Azam, who was awarded life sentence by International Crimes Tribunal-1 for his involvement in crimes against humanity in 1971, had been kept at a prison cell of the BSMMU since January 11, 2012, the day he was arrested.He appealed to the Supreme Court on September 5 last year seeking an overturn of his conviction and the ‘jail until death sentence’ he received from the ICT-1 on July 15, 2013. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has fixed December 2, 2014, to start hearing the appeal filed by Ghulam Azam.
