Badrul Ahsan :A Dhaka court granted 7-day remand of an employee of ‘Ghoroa Hotel and Restaurant to interrogate him in connection with the killing of much talked hotel boy Riyad in the city on early hours of Wednesday.Metro Politan magistrate Mollah Saiful Islam passed the order to put Jasim allias Grill Jasim after the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) produced him before the court seeking a 10-day remand. At the same time, the court rejected the bail plea submitted on behalf of the accused. On Thursday, police arrested Jasim from the city’s Motijheel area.Riyad was shot dead allegedly by his owner Ariful Islam Sohel. The victim’s elder brother Ripon Hossain filed a case with Wari Police Station accusing three persons, including restaurant owner Sohel. However, people expressed surprise for not arresting the hotel owner Sohel despite allegation against him of shoting the hotel boy Riyad. Many alleged that Sohel has been at large since the incident allegedly with the support of the law enforcers.”As there are lots of evidence about Sohel’s involvement in the brutal killing, why are not the police arresting him?” A hotel boy of Ghoroa hotel told the New Nation preferring anonymity. “Hotel owner Sohel is an active member of ruling Awami League. He is getting police protection rather than being arresting,” he added.Sohel is active follower of ruling Awami League and using his political influence to avoid arrest. However, quoting fellow workers of the deceased, Sub-Inspector of Wari Police Station Abdul Khaleque said some workers of the hotel used to reside in an apartment owned by Ariful Islam Sohel, proprietor of the restaurant, at Swamibagh. They locked in an altercation around 1am on Wednesday over the theft of a mobile phone which led to a scuffle.Restaurant owner Sohel reportedly went there at that time. At one stage, he opened fire at Riyad, leaving him injured.Riyad was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 1:45am.However, Abdul Khaleque said that Sohel is under the surveillance of law enforcers and might be arrested any time. Meanwhile, psychologists have explained the murder as not a simple incident, but mindset of the criminals as demonstration of power in a lawless society. Most perpetrators are owners of quick money or ruling party operatives who believe that they have their impunity from any crime. Whimsical cruelty is thus ending in killing, said Prof Shah Ehsan Habib of the Department of Sociology of Dhaka University explaining the behaviour.
