The UNESCO Award winner noted Ghazal singer Jamal Hasan is hailed from traditional Sobhan Mollah’s house at Rosanggiri of Fatikchhari in Chattogram. He is son of Md Nurul Islam and Masuda Khatun. Popular film actress Purnima is also hailed from Sobhan Mollah’s residence. She is daughter of Dr Hanif who is elder brother of Jamal Hasan. Dr Hanif died many years ago.
Jamal is now one of the top of Ghazal singers in the country by virtue of his outstanding rendering style and accurate pronunciation. During childhood he had fascination about music.
During that time he could play Setar and Banjo well. His interest to play instruments Ustad Zia Uddin of Pakistan gave him scope to receiving lesson from Ghazal Emperor of the Subcontinent Mehedi Hasan when Jamal was studying in Bengali School of Karachi in Pakistan. After receiving one year training from Mehedi Hasan, Bangladesh got independence from Pakistan.
After independence of Bangladesh, Jamal received training from British government given ‘Great Master’ title owner Ghulam Hossain Ashrafi, who was also student of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, for four years in Kolkata. By this way he established himself as a Ghazal singer.
Ustad Jamal Hasan said, “Folk songs, modern songs, Thumri, Dadra, Kheyal and Ghazal are different genres in music. During childhood I liked Ghazal. For this reason, I established myself as a Ghazal singer. It is positive that after many years in our country many listeners have built up who want to hear Ghazals. I regularly give training to many Ghazal singers. I like the matter.”
Jamal Hasan got the UNESCO Award in the beginning of 90s. Nazre Jaam is the only released solo Ghazal album of Jamal Hasan.
