The relaxation of eligibility criteria has not helped Dhaka University English department get more than 17 candidates from the ‘Kha’ unit, leaving the authorities to consider getting students from the ‘Gha’ unit to fill 133 vacant seats.
Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique said at end of an admission committee meeting on Tuesday that the pass mark for Elective English had been scaled down from 15 to 8, and that of General English from 20 to 18.
The pass marks for the other papers remain unchanged.
If seats lie vacant even after such relaxation, students who have cleared the ‘Gha’ unit test would be inducted to fill them, he said. The English Department is to admit 150 students this year – 125 of them were to be from the ‘Kha’ unit of the Arts section and the rest from ‘Gha’ unit under the Social Sciences.
