UNB, Dhaka :
Stating that they will soon call for a fresh anti-government movement, BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Sunday urged his party colleagues to get ready for making it a success overcoming all the obstacles.
“People want a change in power, and they think BNP is the only alternative to doing that. It’s now essential for BNP and other parties to take to the streets under Khaleda Zia’s leadership with courage and taking risk,” he said.
Speaking at a protest rally, he further said, “We’ve started the process to wage a movement by strengthening our party’s organisational capacity. I believe a fresh call for a democratic struggle will be given very soon. I call upon all to get ready for taking part in it, and ensure a victory.”
Ex-leaders of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal from Sirajgonj district organised the programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) protesting the jailing of BNP Vice-Chairman Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku by a court in political cases. On April 10, a Sirajgonj court sent Tuku to jail rejecting his bail petitions as he surrendered before it in three cases filed against him in connection with political violence.
Nazrul, a BNP standing committee member, said the country’s people have got fed up with the government for its undemocratic attitude, misrule and failure to keep the prices of the daily essentials within the reach of commoners. Under the circumstances, he said, “We must wage a peaceful and democratic movement in favour of people, and our victory is certain.” Accusing the ruling party of perpetuating its power by force and resorting to repressive acts, the BNP leader said Awami League will take a long time to return to power through election if it is ousted this time. He branded Awami League as an anti-democratic party, and alleged that there had been all the anti-democratic activities during its rule at different times.
