Germany to provide 200m Euro to BD 6 dev projects

Germany will provide 200 million Euro (approximately Taka 1,846.6 crore) to Bangladesh for implementing projects in six different sectors, including renewable energy and energy efficiency, climate change and water resource management.
Of the total amount, 172 million Euro will be provided as financial cooperation for implementing projects on renewable energy and energy efficiency, climate change adaptation, textile and education-research, water resource management while 28 million Euro will be provided as technical cooperation.
In this regard, two bilateral agreements were signed on Tuesday between Bangladesh and Germany at the Economic Relations Division (ERD) in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.
ERD Secretary Monowar Ahmed and German Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Fahrenholtz signed the agreements on behalf of their respective governments.
Out of the amount, 156 million Euro will be spent on renewable energy and energy efficiency while 26 million Euro to be provided to Climate change-adapted development programme in urban areas, 7.5 million Euro in textile sector, 4.5 million Euro in water resources management in Dhaka, 4 million Euro for Sundarbans mangrove management plan and 2 million Euro in study and expert fund.
After signing of the agreements, ERD Secretary Monowar Ahmed said the German government is providing loan and grant assistance in various projects under these six important sectors.
Mentioning these projects as important, Peter Fahrenholtz said, “We have a lot of investment in the garment sector of Bangladesh. This sector needs to be taken forward further. Sundarbans, one of the world’s mangrove forests, must also be protected. There is no alternative to renewable energy to protect the environment and nature of Bangladesh.”
Apart from this, the German government has always been providing assistance to Bangladesh to boost knowledge and skills, he added.
Germany has been providing financial and technical assistance to Bangladesh since 1972, which amounts today to a total of over 3 billion Euro, according to ERD and German embassy.
