UNB, Dhaka :

The German Embassy in Dhaka has launched a project of improving and expanding the existing facilities of the school that Monir Hossain, a 14-year-old arson victim of hartal, used to attend.
Chargé d’ Affaires of the German Embassy in Dhaka Dr Ferdinand von Weyhe, travelled to Tangail in remembrance of Monir, the arson victim who faced an unfortunate death amidst all the unrest situation that prevailed in the country before the January-5 polls.
On November 4, 2013 the teenage schoolboy, Monir, was killed on a hartal day when pickets set alight the covered van in which he and his father were travelling.
Currently, the school has almost 200 students who are being taught in four classrooms. The fifth classroom has been constructed with the Embassy funds to reduce the number of children per class. Additional tables, chairs and proper blackboards have also been provided for the classroom.
Besides, the school will be connected to the local electricity grid which will allow the installation of light bulbs as well as fans.
The Embassy has also helped to support the installation of sanitary facilities. The classroom is built in his tribute and is to be named after Monir himself.
During the inauguration ceremony, Dr von Weyhe said the tragic death of an innocent child has had the whole nation grieve. “With this small contribution, Germany hopes to support the people of the village by providing improved school facilities to this community,” he said.
The diplomat said the premature death of this innocent victim due to unnecessary violence shall not be forgotten.
