UNB, Dhaka :
Visiting German parliamentary delegation Chief Dagmar Woehrl on Monday said the current Parliament of Bangladesh might not enjoy sufficient acceptance by the people for going the full five-year distance.
She conveyed Bundestag’s (German national Parliament) concerns regarding the issue during a meeting with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at the latter’s office.
The members of the visiting delegation hoped that signals would soon come out of Bangladesh for the beginning of substantial dialogue between major
political forces, said a German Embassy press release. During the meeting, the delegation chief congratulated her host on being the first female Speaker of Bangladesh and praised her leadership role.
Woehrl also informed the Speaker on their visit to the textile factories and Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Savar on Sunday where the Committee observed the working conditions in factories and met with survivors of the collapsed Rana Plaza building respectively.
She said, “We’ve talked to both the factory owners and the victims of the tragic accident. Now we hope that the Bangladeshi Parliamentarians will take clear initiatives to amend the existing labour laws and improve the social security standards of the workers to fully meet ILO standards so that similar preventable incidents can be avoided in the future.”
Earlier, the delegation met the members of the German Bangladesh Parliamentary Friendship Group.
