The German government expressed its interest to extend more technical assistance for the development of textile education in Bangladesh and producing skilled manpower. The German based GIZ has proposed to implement a project titled ‘Higher Education and Leadership Development for Sustainable Textiles in Bangladesh (HELD)’.
GIZ proposed to launch the activities of three years project from the year 2021.
This project will assist Bangladesh to achieve the targets of Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
A three-member delegation led by Dr. Christian Boochmann, Project Director of GIZ, apprised UGC Member Dr. Muhammed Alamgir about the proposed project at a meeting held at UGC on 8 February 2021. Dr. Ferdous Zaman, Secretary (Additional Charge), Durga Rani Sarker, Additional Director and Rukshana Laila, Deputy Director, Planning and Development Division of UGC, were present at the meeting.
Dr. Christian Boochmann in the meeting expressed their interest to launch the HELD Project after successful completion of another project for the textile sector titled “German-Bangladesh Higher Education Network for Sustainable Textiles (HEST).
The project involving a cost of 3 million Euros (BDT 30 crore) will help expand the higher education in textile sectors and develop skilled manpower in Bangladesh.
The project will also open scopes for researches in textiles and readymade garments sectors and upgrade the efficiency of the managers of these sectors”.
Dr.Boochmann also sought cooperation of the government of Bangladesh in implementing the new project.
UGC Member Professor Muhammed Alamgir mentioned that the GIZ came up with the offer to implement HELD Project after evaluation of the first phase project HEST which is a very good news for the country.
He expressed his optimism that the proposed project will contribute to face the challenges of textile education in Bangladesh. A collaboration and network will be established between Germany and relevant universities of Bangladesh with the proposed project.
The readymade garments sectors will be highly benefited with this project, Professor Alamgir pointed out.
The delegation proposed UGC to include Bangladesh Technical Education Board and Bangladesh Textiles University to implement the project. The project will be implemented by Ministry of Education with UGC as the implementing agency.
The meeting also informed that different aspects of the project will be finalized later.
