Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the Generation Breakthrough Project is a positive initiative to prevent gender-based violence and improve the reproductive health of the children and adolescent.
“The government has taken many initiatives like generation breakthrough to ensure gender equality,” he said this on Thursday while addressing a discussion meeting as the chief guest at International Mother Language Institute, at Segunbagicha in the city.
Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) organized the discussion titled “Dialogue and Discussion Meeting with the Head of the Institutions of Dhaka Metropolitan City and Field Level Officials of DSHE under project area” to share experience under the banner of the Generation Breakthrough Project.
Education Secretary, Md. Sohorab Hossain, Dr. Annie Vestjens, First Secretary SRHR and Gender, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands, Iori Kato, Representative a.i., UNFPA Bangladesh and Orla Murphy, Country Director of Plan International Bangladesh were present as guest of honour.
Professor Dr. S M Wahiduzzaman, Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education chaired the event while Dr. Mohammed Jahangir Hossain, Project Director of Generation Breakthrough and Director (Planning and Development) of Directorate of Secondary Higher Education presented a presentation at beginning of the event.
The project is implementing to address Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) issues through different interventions covering 300 Schools and 50 Madrasahs in selected 4 districts with the assistance of UNFPA and Plan International Bangladesh. This project is financially supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
It has been implementing in four districts as a pilot project. Ministry of Education is planning to scale up the project around the 64 districts. He thanked to the Netherlands Embassy, UNFPA and Plan International for their cordial support to success the project activities.
“We are happy to support to Bangladesh Government in implementing the project on Gender Based Violence and Adolescents Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights which is an important issue to achieve the SDG”, said Dr. Annie Vestjens, First Secretary SRHR and Gender, The Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands.
All the heads of the educational institutions of Dhaka city under the project and the officials from DSHE, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, different departments of ministries, UN agency, International NGOs, National NGOs and CSOs were present on the occasion.
