A seminar on ‘Social Awareness and Legal Rights: Gender Perspective’ organized by Complaint Committee to Prevent Sexual Harassment of Daffodil International University (DIU) was held on Saturday at 71 Milonayoton of the University. Advocate Fawzia Karim Firoze, President of Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers Association (BNWLA) and Sahely Ferdous, Assistant Inspector General of Bangladesh Police were present at the seminar as Resource Person. Adv Syeda Salah Sultana, Lawyer of Article 9, Prof Dr Md. Golam Mowla Choudhury, Controller of Examinations and Prof AMM Hamidur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science of DIU also spoke in the seminar. The seminar was conducted by Prof Dr. Farhana Helal Mehtab, Associate Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science and Chairperson, Complaint Committee to Prevent Sexual Harassment, DIU.
While addressing Advocate Fawzia Karim Firoze said, due to development of technology, the type of sexual harassment has changed all over the world. Now sexual harassment is going on through e-mail, SMS, inbox, Messenger and different social media in all over the world. Bangladesh is not let behind of this problem. Now a day’s lots of women are being victimized through cyber crime.
That is why Advocate Fawzia Karim Firoze urged the students to being aware about sexual harassment. There exist many laws in Bangladesh to prevent cyber crime.
But, it isn’t possible to prevent all crimes by using of law. To prevent these cyber crimes, social awareness is very much important, she added. .
Advocate Fawzia Karim Firoze stressed that sexual harassments are increasing in society for this three reasons. First of all is attitude towards women, second is social perspective and third is decadency of culture. To prevent the sexual harassment from the society, it’s badly needed to change the attitude towards women. She added.
Addressing among the students AIG Sahely Ferdous said, sexual harassment is increasing day by day in the society due to lack of proper knowledge about sexual harassment. Most of the male or female aren’t aware of what kind of behavior is called to sexual harassment.
So, it is very important to increase awareness among male and female both about sexual harassment. She added.
