General Belal also met President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban the same day. During the meeting, Shafiul Huq expressed his gratitude to the government for appointing him as the Chief of Army Staff and sought the President’s cooperation in developing and modernising the Bangladesh Army, President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin told UNB.
The new Army Chief also placed wreaths at the Shikha Anirban at Dhaka Cantonment paying tributes to the soldiers martyred during the Liberation War in 1971. A smartly turned out contingent of the Armed Forces presented to him a guard of honour, said an ISPR press release. The army chief also planted a tree there and took part in a doa mahfil. Other senior officials of the force were present on this occasion.
New Chief of Army Staff General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq on Sunday paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office.
During the meeting, the Army Chief sought cooperation of the Prime Minister in discharging his duties, PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters. The Prime Minister assured the new Army chief of extending her all possible cooperation in performing his duties, and wished his success.
