GDP must include women household activities

A group of 22 Rights based Civil Society Networks has demanded taking into
account women activities related to household duties in computation of the national economy and its GDP (Gross Domestic Product). At a pre-budget human chain titled “Count Women Activities in National Economy” held at national press club on
Thursday they said women household activities are contributing to the economic development and its inclusion in the GDP will significantly raise the growth level.
Mustafa Kamal Akand of COAST Trust moderated the event. Ferdous Ara Rumee presented the keynote presentation. Dr. Shamsul Islam and Subal Sarkar of Bangladesh Landless Somiti, Kazi Muniruzzaman form Prochesta Kalayan Somiti, Jayed Iqbal Khan of Krishak Federation, Kader Hazari and Asif Iqbal also spoke on the occasion.
Mrs. Rumee said poor and lowq income people must be excluded from VAT and Tax payment. Moreover the government must keep prices of essentials within purchasing power of people which require tax justice based on income level.
She women are low paid in our informal sector and even our economy does not recognize household activities.
Mr. Jayed Iqbal Khan said current gender budgeting is questionable because it is not properly implemented and on many occasions money remained unspent due to reluctance of govt. officials. Women are remaining deprived from the benefit of these projects. Mr. Asif Iqbal said women are facing problems in having accessing to financial services.
