The government on Thursday suspended for the third time Gazipur City Corporation Mayor MA Mannan.
Following an order of the Supreme Court, Mayor Mannan resumed his office on June 18 after 28 months of suspension.
The Gazipur Mayor was first suspended on August 19, 2015 and then on April 18 last year.
The Local Government Division on Thursday issued a notification in this regard as a lower court accepted charges against Mannan in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for misusing power and embezzling state money, said Zakir Hossain, Public Relations Officer of the LGRD and Cooperatives Ministry.
Mannan was being removed because of a charge sheet submitted against him by the Anti-Corruption Commission, the circular said.
He was arrested on February 11 in 2015 from his residence at Baridhara in Dhaka in a case filed in connection with petrol bomb attack on a passenger bus.
The Mayor rejoined his office as the High Court stayed the government’s order on his suspension. The government later submitted leave-to-appeal petition, but the Supreme Court dismissed it.
