Gazipur and Khulna City Corporations election schedule will be announced on March 31, said Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin.
The decision was taken on Monday in the Election Commission office after a meeting of the Commission presided over by the Chief Election Commissioner K M Nurul Huda. Other commissioners were present also.
EC Secretary Helal Uddin disclosed it to the media after the meeting.
He said, the Commission discussed about the five city corporation polls. The city corporations are Gazipur, Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi and Sylhet. The election in these five cities will be held by turn.
To a question in a press briefing, Helal said, however, the five city corporations’ polls schedule won’t be announced together.
About Electronic Voting Machine, it may be used in local polls. If voters’ confidence grows, it will be use in National Polls. The City Corporation polls must be held before the next general election. The tenure of Gazipur City Corporation will expire on September 4, Khulna September 25, Rajshahi October 5, Sylhet October 8 and Barisal October 23.
According to the Local Government Act(City Corporation), election must be held before 180 days of the expire of the tenure.
