Staff Reporter :
Police on Friday arrested 45 Jamaat-e-Islami men, including its Gazipur City Chief SM Sanaullah, just weeks ahead of the city corporation elections there.
SM Sanaullah earlier filed nomination paper as an independent candidate to contest in the mayor elections to be held on May 15, but he later withdrew his candidature in support of the BNP’s Hasan Uddin Sarker.
Detective Branch (DB) of Police raided Swapnachura Resort at Pubail and picked up them at 7:30am and recovered some handmade bombs also, said our local correspondent quoting Harun-or-Rashid, Superintendent of Police, Gazipur.
The police official suspected the Jamaat men to have gathered there to carry out subversive activities. They, however, tried to flee sensing the presence of the law enforcers.
A plainclothe team of police recovered 15 crude bombs and 18 religiously inciting books from their possession.
Meanwhile, Mayor candidate Hasan Uddin Sarkar condemned the arrest claiming that it was motivated.
