The Law Ministry on Thursday issued a gazette notification on the government order about Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha’s going abroad.
President Md Abdul Hamid has approved an extended leave application by the Chief Justice and appointed Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah to head the
court in his absence, said the notification signed by Law Secretary Abu Saleh Sk Md Zahirul Haque.
The ministry issued the gazette notification after President Md. Abdul Hamid on Wednesday gave consent to the CJ’s leaving the country for Australia.
The chief justice is on one-month’s leave “on health grounds” since October 3.
The notification said, Sinha’s application for a 30-day leave from Oct 3 to Nov 1 had previously been approved but a new order was issued by the President to extend the Chief Justice’s overseas stay.
The notice states that Justice Wahhab Miah will fulfill the duties of the Chief Justice between Nov 2 and Nov 10, or until Justice Sinha returns.
Earlier, Law Minister Anisul Huq said the Chief Justice had gone on leave for treatment as he had cancer.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) leaders and the BNP, however, alleged that the Chief Justice was sent on forced leave.
