Miscreants have thrown acid on those attending a ‘Gaye Holud’ ceremony, leaving five persons burnt in Shariatpur.
The groom was among those burnt.
The incident took place at the Upazila’s south Tarabunia on Wednesday night.
Those who sustained acid burns were the groom Selim Sarkar, 30, his nephew ‘Siam’, 4, niece ‘Rabeya’, 5, Tohra Begum, 17, and Shahina Akter, 22. They were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s (DMCH) burn unit.
Selim’s elder brother Chhadek Sarkar said the bride had a relationship with one ‘Sifat’ who may have been responsible for the acid attack.
Sarkar said the bride’s family had turned down Sifat’s proposal of marriage and that may have upset him.
‘Sifat’ has fled the area after the incident.
Sakhipur Police OC Samir Sarkar said Selim’s marriage with the girl was due on Thursday after the ‘gaye holud’ ceremony a day before.
“A group of miscreants entered the house and disrupted the holud ceremony around 11pm. They threw acid at the groom. Four around him were also burnt,” OC Samir said.
The injured were rushed to the Chandpur Sadar Hospital and were later sent to the DMCH from there.
Chandpur hospital’s doctor Sirajul Islam said, “Those burnt were not in good condition.”
DMCH Police Outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque said Selim has 30 percent burn on his body. Three of the victims, including Selim, were kept in the hospital while the others were released.
