UNB, Dhaka :
Two left leaning parties-Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) — will jointly stage demonstrations in the capital on Saturday, protesting the move to raise gas prices from January next.
The CPB and BSD will also stage demonstrations across the country on Monday.
BSD general secretary Khaliquzzaman made the announcement after a joint meeting of the two left-leaning parties at CPB central office in the city’s Paltan area.
Energy expert Badrul Imam, member secretary of
the National Committee to Protect Oil Gas Mineral Resources Power and Ports Prof Anu Muhammad, economist Prof MM Akash, CPB president Mujahidul Islam Selim and its leader Ruhin Hossain Prince, among others, addressed the meeting, held with Khaliquzzaman in the chair.
They demanded the government shun its move to raise the prices of gas that will come into effect on January 1 next.
Anu Muhammad said the decision to hike gas prices will directly affect 80-85 percent people living under the poverty line.
Badrul Imam blamed mismanagement and corruption for the mess in the energy sector. “Bapex should take over the charge of the country’s gas exploration immediately from profit-making multinational companies like Chevron, Gazprom, Naiko for the sake of protecting the sector.”
MM Akash demanded suspension of the government’s move till completion of the public hearing over the price hike of gas, which now remains pending with the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
As per the BERC law, the commission shall conduct a public hearing over any energy price hike related to policy decisions.
