Garment workers demand budgetary allocation

Leaders of the Garment Sramik Odhikar Andolan staged a protest rally in the capital on Thursday demanding budgetary allocation in the proposed national budget for 2022-23 financial years for the welfare of the garment workers.
Garment Sramik Odhikar Andolan held the rally in front of the National Press Club, with the coordinator of the caucus Shahidul Islam Sabuj in the chair.
Garment labour leader Mahbubur Rahman Ismail said that there was no specific allocation for the welfare of the garment workers in the proposed budget, which was placed in the parliament.
He demanded particular allocation in the budget for introduction of rationing for the garment workers so that they could purchase essential commodities at cheaper prices. Another garment labour leader Taslima Akhter said that the garment workers were low-paid and they could not support their families due to the price hike of the essential commodities.
Moreover, labour leaders Raju Ahmed, Shabnam Hafiz, Saiful Islam, Biplob Bhattacharya and others spoke at the rally. Meanwhile, the demand came from a human chain formed by the GBGWF in front of the National Press Club in the capital.
GBGWF president Sultana Begum, Bangladesh Workers’ Party Dhaka Metropolitan unit president Abul Hossain, Nagarik Parishad convener Mohammad Samsuddin and Bangladesh Garments Textile Workers’ Federation president Shamima Akter Shirin spoke on the occasion. “We have so many problems, including lower wage, in the country’s 5,500 garments factories, unhealthy working atmosphere, lack of transportation and medical and day-care service.
